International Women’s Day: Women in the Palestinian Liberation Struggle

On International Women’s Day, it is critical to recognize the central role of Palestinian women in the struggle for liberation. Palestinian women are, and have been throughout history, leaders, intellectuals, fighters, organizers, and writers in the Palestinian national cause, and have been a constant part of every mobilization for justice and liberation in Palestine. Indeed, the structures pioneered by Palestinian women’s committees were in many ways the backbone of the popular support networks of the Intifada and building connections among members of the Palestinian community outside Palestine. Within Palestine and in the diaspora, Palestinian women have organized themselves and their people for struggle and action.

12 Palestinian Female Prisoners remain in ‘Israeli’ Occupation jails: Lina Jarbouni, she is the longest serving Palestinian woman political prisoner, she is from Arabba Al Batouf village, near the Palestinian City of Akka (Akko-Acre): Arrested on 18th April 2002 and sentenced for 17 years by the court of the Occupation.

Manar Zawahreh from Bethlehem: Arrested on 13th September 2012 and sentenced for one year by the court of the Occupation.

Inam Al-Hasanat from Bethlehem: Arrested on 13th August 2012 and sentenced for two years by the court of the Occupation.

Asma Al-Batran, from Hebron: Arrested on 27th August 2012 sentenced to 10 months by the court of the Occupation and fined up to 680 USD.

The Case Against “Israel”

SPHR-UBC would like to recognize that this event and all their activities take place on the unceded territory of the Musqueam people. SPHR-UBC unequivocally stands in solidaritywith the Musqueam people and all their supporters in the Idle No More movement.
Israel was created unilaterally in 1948 as a result of the ethnic cleansing of over 750,000 Palestinians. This occupation maintained and supported by Western powers continues until today, and now more than 8 million Palestinians live outside Palestine. All those who stayed either live as second class citizens inside 1948 Palestine, or as an occupied people in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. The purpose of this event is to challenge the creation of this Zionist entity, break the silence and inform students and all humans of conscious about the legal and moral implications of supporting this illegal Apartheid state.

Does the apartheid state have a right to exist? Did it ethnically cleanse 750,000 Palestinians and destroy over 500 villages or is this just a Palestinian myth? Is it the only “true” democracy in the Middle East or is it a settler-colonial Apartheid state? And why does this Zionist entity have to maintain its aggression and occupation of Palestine? Is this structure of systemic and systematic colonialism, oppression and occupation of stolen land viable or is it doomed to failure?

These, among many other questions, will be addressed by Dr. As’ad Abu Khalil, a Lebanese American Professor of Political Science at California State University and the man responsible for the Angry Arab News Agency blog. The event titled “The Case Against ‘Israel’” will shed light on very important questions facing Palestinians and their supporters.

مع استمرار الحديث هذه الأيام عن المصالحة بين حركتي فتح وحماس، وارتفاع الأمل بتوحيد ما أطلق عليه (شطري الوطن)، أي 20% من فلسطين التاريخية، وبالذات بعد الأداء المثير للإعجاب للمقاومة الفلسطينية في غزة، فإنّ العديد من الأسئلة يتم التغاضي عنها، أحياناً بدون قصد، وكثيراً بوعي تام نابع عن أيديولوجية تعبر عن مصالح الطرفين المتناحرين منذ فترة طويلة.
ومع انحسار خيارات السلطة الوطنية الفلسطينية المدعومة من قبل حركة فتح في الوصول إلى حلّ سياسي روّجت له طويلاً، وانزلاق حركة حماس في مستنقع المشروع السياسي الأوسلوي من خلال مشاركتها في انتخابات المجلس التشريعي، إحدى أدوات السلطة الأوسلوية، وتدهور اليسار في عمليات «الأنجزة» المصاحبة لاتفاقيات أوسلو، فإنّ السؤال يتمحور الآن حول البديل الديموقراطي الذي لم يُصب بفيروس أوسلو التصفوي ولا قرينه الإسلاموي.
وللتوضيح، فإنّ قطاع غزة مرّ بالتجربة الأوسلوية بين عامي 1996 و2005، ولا يزال يخوض التجربة الإسلاموية منذ عام 2006. تميّزت الفترة الأولى سياسياً بالحديث عن المفاوضات كأنجع الطرق للوصول الى حلٍ سياسي للقضية الفلسطينية على أساس ما اتُّفق على تسميته «حلّ الدولتين، أي من خلال إقامة دولة فلسطينية مستقلة على 22% من أرض فلسطين التاريخية بجوار دولة إسرائيل بعد الاعتراف بها. وكانت منظمة التحرير قد اعترفت بحقّ إسرائيل في الوجود، في مقابل اعتراف الأخيرة بمنظمة التحرير ممثلاً للشعب الفلسطيني. وتوالت اللقاءات والحوارات بين «الطرفين»، غير المتكافئين في القوة، من دون الأخذ بعين الاعتبار الطابع الكولونيالي الاستيطاني لإسرائيل وسياسة التطهير العرقي التي مارستها منذ تأسيسها، وبنيتها العنصرية. وهكذا أعيد تعريف القضية بشكل يتناغم مع أقصى ما يطرحه «اليسار» الصهيوني: دولتين لشعبين، مع التغاضي عن عنصرين رئيسيين في حق تقرير المصير: عودة اللاجئين وإنهاء الطابع العنصري للدولة العبرية.
وللترويج لهذه الفكرة، جرى ضخ كمية من الأموال المُسيَّسة في خزينة السلطة الوطنية تضمن شراء الولاءات وتضخيم الجهاز البيروقراطي المرتبط بها. كما تمّ تفريخ مجتمع متأنجز موازٍ لها، غير معادٍ لطروحاتها، يتميز بولائه لتنظيمات، كانت يسارية، وأصبحت خليطاً عجيباً من النيوليبيرالية المابعد حداثية والستالينية النفعية!
وعاش القطاع والضفة خديعة الازدهار الاقتصادي التابع. فقد أصبح لفلسطينيي الـ 67 حكومة، ورئيس، وميناء لم يتم تشغيله مطلقاً، ومطار تشرف عليه إسرائيل، وأجهزة أمنية تحافظ على «الاستقرار» وتوظف كمّاً هائلاً من العاطلين من العمل ومن الذين نشطوا ضد الاحتلال خلال سنوات الانتفاضة المجيدة (1987 – 1993).

ووصل المشروع الأوسلوي إلى نهاياته، على الرغم من محاولات الإنعاش التي تحدث بين الفينة والأخرى مع انكشاف حقيقته في كامب ديفيد عام 2000 من خلال الصفعة المؤلمة التي وجهتها الإدارة الأميركية والحكومة الإسرائيلية للمفاوض الفلسطيني. فقد أصبح من الواضح في كامب ديفيد أنّه بالرغم من كلّ التنازلات الفلسطينية التي تخطت كل الخطوط الحمراء، فإنّ مشروع الاستقلال لم يكن كما جرى الترويج له فلسطينياً، بمعنى إقامة دولة فلسطينية مستقلة في الضفة الغربية وقطاع غزة، تكون القدس عاصمة لها. فحتى هذا التصغير غير المسبوق تاريخياً لفلسطين كان غير مقبولاً من «الطرف الآخر» الذي يريد «حصته» في البانتوستان/ المعزل العرقي الجديد المنوي إقامته في الشرق الأوسط.

وكانت انتخابات المجلس التشريعي عام 2006 رسالة واضحة من سكان الضفة والقطاع وردّاً على ما تمّ الترويج له من «مفاوضات» و«حل الدولتين» العنصري، والفساد المستشري مع تطور، وتدهور العملية السياسية المسماة «مشروع السلام». كان هناك ربط في المخيلة الشعبية الفلسطينية بين هذه المصطلحات كلها وعملية الأسلوة التي بدأت منذ عام 1993. وكان القرار الشعبي بمعاقبة الحركة التي وقفت وراء هذه العملية وحلفائها من فصائل منظمة التحرير. وتمّ التصويت للطرف الذي جرى تصويره على أنه البديل الوحيد القادر على إيقاف هذا التدهور، الطرف الذي اتخذ المقاومة شعاراً له طوال فترة وجوده في المعارضة.

لم تكن الشعارات الإسلاموية قد رُفعت عند فوز التيار الإسلامي. بل جرى التأكيد مراراً وتكراراً على أنّ الحريات الفردية لن يتمّ التعدي عليها، وأنّ فهم الحركة للشريعة لن يتم تطبيقه، وأنّ الفساد سيُحارب، وأنّ الشراكة الوطنية هي أساس الحكم. كما تمّ التلميح الى أنه سيُسمح لقيادة السلطة بالاستمرار في خطها التفاوضي! ونتيجة للمشاركة في العملية السياسية الناتجة من اتفاقيات أوسلو، فإنّ حركة حماس أكدت قبولها بدولة فلسطينية على حدود الـ 67، أيّ على أساس حل الدولتين، من دون الاعتراف بإسرائيل، أوّ أنّها، أي الحركة، لا تقبل بحل الدولتين! وعمدت الى إرسال رسائل متناقضة في هذا الخصوص، فمن رسائل أُرسلت إلى الإدارة الأميركية الجديدة، إلى تصريحات صحافية لرئيس الوزراء ورئيس المكتب السياسي، تتمّ مناقضتها بتصريحات لقيادات أخرى، والحديث عن هدنة طويلة المدى، تمّ فقدان البوصلة وغياب الرؤية السياسية الواضحة المعالم التي بدونها ليس بإمكان أيّ حركة تحرر أن تنتصر.
رافق كل ذلك انصياع سريع لإغراء القوة «المزيفة» التي صاحبت تشكيل حكومة، بلا سيادة أو سلطة حقيقية، شبيهة في بنيتها الأيديولوجية بسلطة أوسلو، لكن بغطاء ديني تبريري. وتمّ خلق طبقة ريعية طفيلية شبيهة بالبورجوازية الجديدة غير المنتجة وليدة اتفاقيات أوسلو. في كلا الحالتين، تميّزت هذه الطبقة بعدم الإنتاجية ومحاولة الكسب السريع الناتج من محدودية المُنتج الداخل إلى القطاع واحتكار السوق من خلال السيطرة على شريان الحياة الوحيد للقطاع المحاصر، أي الأنفاق التي تربط قطاع غزة بجمهورية مصر العربية. وتمّ التنصل من الأقوال السابقة عن عدم التدخل في الحريات الشخصية والسماح بحيز كبير من الديموقراطية، التي كانت أساس وصول الحركة إلى الحكم تحت حراب الاحتلال. وتمّ تطبيق قوانين، دون سنّها، من فرض للحجاب على المحاميات، ومنع عرض المانيكان «المغري» في المحال، إلى الطلب من المقاهي عدم السماح للنساء بتدخين الشيشة، و«إقناع» إدارة جامعة الأقصى الحكومية بفرض «لباس محتشم» على الطالبات «لمنع إظهار المفاتن»، وإطلاق حملة «ترسيخ القيم والفضيلة» ضد الملابس «غير المحتشمة» لمكافحة ما سمّته الزيّ الغربي للفتيات والشباب والتدخل في شكل الحجاب وطريقة لبسه… الخ. كما حصل اعتداء على العديد من التظاهرات، حتى تلك التي تطالب بإنهاء الانقسام، والهجوم على وفد من كتّاب وفنانين أمميّين ومصريين جاؤوا إلى القطاع في إطار احتفالية فلسطين للأدب. كلّ ذلك في إطار عملية تحوّل وانحدار نحو أجندة اجتماعية يمينية متزمتة، تلامس الوهابية، مصاحبة لتنازلات سياسية ترى في حلّ الدولتين/ السجنين طريقاً للخلاص المؤقت، وإن كان على حساب 7 ملايين لاجئ و1.2 مليون مواطن فلسطيني من سكان إسرائيل. وهكذا تحولت غزة من الأسلوة إلى الأسلمة.
أوسلو وحل الدولتين والأجهزة الأمنية واتفاقيات باريس الاقتصادية تحولت إلى «حكومة ربانية» و«هدنة طويلة الأمد» والموافقة على دولة على حدود 67 (مع عدم قبول حل الدولتين!) واقتصاد ريعي يقوم على التهريب عبر الأنفاق والحسنات التي يتم جمعها في العالمين الإسلامي والعربي، مع تنامي ظاهرة المحاباة والغنى الفاحش في مجتمع من أفقر المجتمعات على الأرض! كل ذلك يتم الحفاظ عليه من خلال منظومتين أمنيتين في كلٍ من الضفة والقطاع، منظومتين من المفترض أن مهمتهما الوحيدة هي مقارعة الاحتلال وعدم المس بكرامة أيّ مواطن فلسطيني يعيش على هذه الأرض المباركة. ولكن تقارير منظمات حقوق الإنسان المحلية والدولية ترسم صورة مغايرة.
والآن يُطلب منا أن نتوجه للتسجيل في السجل الانتخابي تمهيداً لانتخابات جديدة للمجلس التشريعي. وفي هذه الانتخابات الموعودة، والتي تصوّروا كأنّها الحل المنشود، لدينا خياران لا ثالث لهما: إما الأسلوة أو الأسلمة؟

Israeli Apartheid Week 2013: Video Trailer

Ninth Annual Israeli Apartheid Week!

We are excited to announce the upcoming 9th annual Israeli Apartheid Week (IAW) starting late February in Europe and moving to various countries through the month of March.

Israeli Apartheid Week (IAW) is an annual international series of events (including rallies, lectures, cultural performances, film screenings, multimedia displays and boycott of Israel actions) held in cities and campuses across the globe. Last year’s IAW was incredibly successful with over 215 cities participating worldwide!

IAW seeks to raise awareness about Israel’s apartheid policies towards the Palestinians and to build support for the growing Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) against Israel campaign.

To accommodate various university schedules and cities from around the world, IAW will take place in slightly different weeks but all in the months of February and March. Here is a list of dates for regions confirmed so far:

Europe: February 25 – March 10
Palestine: 8-15 March
United States: March 4 – 8 (flexible)
Canada: March 4 – 8
South Africa: March 11 – 17

HOW YOU CAN GET INVOLVED DURING IAW

IAW offers ordinary people around the world an opportunity to partake in something truly global. If you would like to get involved and organize your own IAW event or action let us know so that we can share with you the IAW Basis of Unity and organizing principles. Here are some ways that you can actively get involved:

1. Organize a film screening

There are many speakers ranging from academics, politicians, trade unionists and cultural activists that we can suggest for you to host. Be in touch with us and we can put you in contact.

Organize with others a practical boycott of Israel action or have a BDS motion tabled at your relevant student council, municipality etc.

April 6-7: Right of Return Conference, Boston

The Palestinian Right of Return has been discussed and debated by academics and activists alike for decades. Although a great deal of work has concentrated on the ethical implications of the Right to Return, this conference seeks to move forward and grapple with the practical implications of the Right’s fulfillment. What will Palestine look like once the Right of Return has been fulfilled? How will the Right of Return shape the future of the land between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean, and what kind of reality will emerge within a state that witnesses the Return take place?

In bringing together scholars and activists, the Right of Return conference happening at Boston University, April 6-7, hopes to create a space where we shift from the realm of the abstract and instead address the reality of mitigating and correcting the plight of the Palestinian refugees and the diaspora. Recognizing the historical and contemporary suffering of the Palestinian refugees and the deplorable and oppressive conditions which they face today across the Middle East, the conference committee is motivated by a sense of urgency to further the work of envisioning, imagining, and planning the reality of Return.

The Conference wishes to highlight Right of Return discourses as they exist across the plurality of Palestinian communities around the world, including those in Palestine, the Middle East, and further afield in the diaspora with an eye towards shifting the discourse around Palestine in the US Academy and expanding the discourse about the Right of Return within the United States more broadly. We do not take a position on the issue of one- or two-state solution, but instead seek to open the floor to a multiplicity of visions that may themselves occur within different potential political orders.

Within the frame of this conference, we hope to put forth a vision for an inclusive Palestinian future that centers marginalized Palestinian voices. While asserting the inalienable right of Palestinians to return to and live in their homeland, we also principally affirm the right of Israelis to live in Palestine as well. The Right of Return Conference seeks to be inclusive of all voices implied in the context of a post-Return Palestine.

Registration for the conference will begin on February 1st.

As we approach our 65th year of exile from our homeland, the need for Palestinians in the shatat (diaspora) to reinvigorate, develop and carry out an effective strategy for our national movement for liberation and return is as urgent as ever. For too long our voices have been excluded and the majority of us have been unrepresented in the decision-making and direction of our movement.

We call on all Palestinian activists, organizers and community members in the shatat to join us in this historical gathering to re-examine our history and build together towards a free future for our people and land by putting an end to Zionist colonization and normalization everywhere throughout the Palestinian and Arab homeland.

Join us to plan, discuss and learn from each other about our homeland and how we can become active participants in reviving our movement. The conference will include facilitated workshops, plenary discussions, conversations, and presentations – it welcomes your participation, your voice, and your active involvement in reclaiming the voice of the shatat.

At a time when Zionist colonization continues its incessant destruction and exploitation of Palestine and our people, our body-politic remains fragmented, with empty, unrepresentative and often corrupt national institutions and leadership, and a clouded vision of how to move forward towards our national aspirations for return and liberation.

This conference aims to work towards: restoring our people’s morale and commitment to our national struggle for return and liberation, reviving our transnational unity and building our national liberation movement despite our geographical dispersion, and overcoming the current impasse of national fragmentation (socio-economic, political, geographic and ideological).

Participation is a right, but also a duty. Conference participants will not only gain knowledge, but are expected to invest time, energy and willingness to collectively and democratically work with fellow Palestinians to re-build and revive our national liberation movement.

Principles of Unity

May 2013 marks the 65th anniversary of the Nakba, and the 65th year of the ongoing struggle for Palestinian refugees’ return and the liberation of Palestine.

As Palestinians in Shatat, and particularly in North America, we are convening on this date in order to carry out our responsibility to lay out concrete strategies and a clear vision to challenge the status quo and to raise our voice, the voice of the shatat.

The organizers are united by the following principles:

1. The Palestinian people are one people and our cause is one cause. Our objective is to revive the Palestinian national liberation movement and build the national institutions of the Palestinian people based on popular participation and direct democracy, in order to achieve the liberation of the land and people of Palestine and the implementation of the right of Palestinian refugees to return their homes.

2. The conflict with the settler colonialist state of Israel will only be resolved through the dismantling of the racist settler colonial nature of the state, meaning decolonization from Zionism, in all its forms, social, economic and political.

3. The right of return is the first and foremost step to the exercise of our right to self-determination.

4. Based on history, language, culture and geography, Palestine is an integral part of the Arab world and the Palestinian people are an integral part of the Arab nation.

5. Palestine is part and parcel of international resistance to colonialism, settler colonialism, imperialism and Zionism. The Palestinian people’s struggle is the struggle of an indigenous population directly connected to national liberation movements around the world facing the same powers, including the struggle of Indigenous peoples of North America, where this conference is taking place.

6. This effort is part of the struggle to achieve the basic right of Palestinians to elect our representatives in a democratic manner, and to overcome all obstacles being placed in front of our people in Palestine and in the shatat. As Palestinians in shatat, we have a right to representation and raise the voice of the shatat in our national liberation movement.

7. Palestinians have the right to resist injustice and occupation in order to achieve the liberation of their land and people.

8. The governments of the United States and Canada are directly responsible for apartheid, colonization and occupation in Palestine, through their diplomatic, political, military and economic support for the state of Israel. We recognize the US and Canada to be settler colonies built on indigenous lands.

9. We have the responsibility to confront the role of the US and Canada, hold the governments of the US and Canada accountable, and to build alliances with oppressed peoples and communities in North America.

10. We recognize the leadership and central role of Palestinian women in the national liberation movement, in this initiative, and in political representation.

Conference Objectives

Our objectives:

We are convening this conference:

1. To mobilize Palestinians in the diaspora/shatat in order to participate fully in the renaissance of the Palestinian national liberation movement. This includes the development of a strategy for the building of representative political national institutions and achieving real, meaningful and directly democratic representation.

2. To build strong initiatives and direct engagement with our people in Palestine and to assume our responsibility to support their steadfastness and resistance to occupation.

3. To build strong ties and joint initiatives among Palestinians in shatat, in particular the relationship between Palestinians in North America with Palestinians in the refugee camps in the countries around Palestine, such as Syria, Lebanon and Jordan.

4. To unite and mobilize the Palestinian community in North America to challenge the role of the U.S. and Canadian governments in supporting colonialism ,occupation, apartheid and oppression in Palestine, and to strengthen the relationship between the Palestinian community and oppressed and marginalized communities – including the Indigenous and Native peoples of this land – in North America. To develop a strategy for the role of Palestinians in diaspora and shatat in leading and developing the international campaign for boycott, divestment and sanctions and the international isolation of Israel.

5. To develop and organize sectors of the Palestinian community, including students, youth, women, workers to take their leading place in the Palestinian national liberation movement, and to play their role in leading and developing the solidarity movement with Palestine – including within the labor movement, student movement, and other popular movements in North America.

6. To use a historical lens to explore the deep roots and long history of Palestinian resistance and mobilization against colonization in order to learn from this experience and develop the future of our national liberation movement.

7. To bridge Palestinian generations and support the development of new Palestinian leadership.
